April was a fantastic month for the Clover Flat! We are very excited to be able to announce that we have been named as a California Distinguished School. The students and staff worked incredibly hard and deserve all the credit you can possibly give them. Another exciting announcement is that the 2012 Mountain Empire Teacher of the Year is our very own Rebekah Sullivan! Ms. Sullivan is highly deserving of this honor and is a huge asset to our school. We have more big news to announce as well. At the April school board meeting, a plan to restructure the grade levels served at our two schools was approved. Beginning next year, Jacumba School will become a middle school for grades 6,7,8; while Clover Flat will become a primary school for grades K,1,2,3,4,5. I know that many of our community members, and some of our parents, have been caught a bit off guard by the sudden change, but the possibility of this realignment had been discussed ever since it was announced that the District middle school was closing. The issue was brought up at our most recent School Site Council meeting and with the PTA exec board, both of which unanimously supported such a change. The staff of both schools is also in complete support of the realignment. This new alignment will create a school in Jacumba that is completely focused on our middle school students. We have ordered a new mobile computer lab of 25 laptop computers for Jacumba, and are hoping to add a second set of 25 in year two. We also feel that the nearby Jacumba County Library will be a valuable asset to the middle school students. At Clover Flat, bringing the K-1 program, not to mention the fantastic Jacumba teachers, will be added collaboration between all of the primary grades. Plus the close bonds built with the K-1 students and their teachers will now be able to continue in grades 2-5. The K-1 teachers have such a wealth of knowledge as to what works best with their students. That knowledge will now be added to the already successful Clover Flat grade 2-5 program. There are obviously many details to be worked out, so watch for more information in next month’s report. We also want to announce the addition of a new program to be offered at Clover Flat next year~~Early Admission Kindergarten, or EAK. This program will be replacing the current preschool program at the site. The program will be offered to children who have birthdates between 11/2/07 and 10/1/08. Kindergarten this Fall will be for children with birthdates on or before 11/1/07 who are not currently enrolled in school. With this new program, the EAK and K students will be eligible for all of our regular programs including, before and after-school programs, school breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack programs, and our regular busing. The state preschool program is planned to continue at Campo School, and the Head Start will also continue to operate. Look for details on this coming program next month. Awards Assemblies were held after this year’s Spring break. At Clover Flat, the students of the month included: Lane Cochran, Giselle Ramirez, Eve Ivester, Lexey Cunningham, Nicholas Dilly, Lilly Shuster, and Rosalba Virgen. The Spotlight students included: Alejandro Adkins, Darrell Benton, Nakai Lindholm, Joseph Maldonado, Makayla Carlisle, Jacob Membrere, Ray Hammond, Anna Cruz, and Ruben Regalado. A big congratulations to all of you! STAR testing will be starting on May 8 for the grade 2-8 students only. Watch for a notice on testing tips that will be sent out the week before testing. Also be sure to check the calendar for May as we have many upcoming events, including but not limited to: Spring Open House, Sixth Grade Camp, PTA Rummage Sale at Clover Flat, Fifth Grade Floating Lab, Book Fair, sport games, and the last middle school dance.
